Imperfect Measurements

In Imperfect Measurements, Thijs Rijkers explores the relationship between precision and imperfection. Born from the question, “How many square meters are in a pen?”, the work transforms this abstract idea into a visual experience of poetry.

Rather than simply measuring length, Rijkers designed a machine that registers the pen’s motion on paper, revealing unexpected patterns and deviations. Using brass elements and intricate mechanics, the work celebrates the beauty of imperfection and variation.

This early work was originally titled One Line Story, the name evolved to reflect its true essence: embracing imperfection as an inherent and meaningful part of art.
