Artificial Waves reflects Thijs Rijkers’ fascination with replicating nature’s beauty. Inspired by the serene reflections of sunlight on the subtle ripples of calm water, this kinetic light installation recreates those fleeting patterns through artificial means.
The work was created during a residency in the Torenkamer at the Vondelpaviljoen. With limited tools—an angle grinder, drill, and files—and just five days, Thijs crafted an elegant installation that mirrors nature’s subtle movements.
This machine showcases his talent for turning limitations into creative opportunities, blending technical skill with artistic finesse by capturing the interplay of light and motion.
